Dracon

From Dracon we get the word 'Draconian', meaning an old and unnecessarily heavy punishment. Dracon was infamous for the severe sentences his laws imposed on such minor crimes as idleness, petty theft, and vagrancy. Rather than think of lesser sentences for minor crimes, legend has it that Dracon was always trying to think of sentences worse than death for the really major ones.

Dracon Society

Dracons follow a strong herd instincta lone dracon is a rarity. The leader of a dracon herd is called a kaba. Kaba are chosen based on a complicated system of kinship relations. The kaba is assisted by the high priest, or shalla. The shalla is often a cleric, and there will be one for every 30 dracons in the herd.

Dracon as Characters

Almost all exceptional dracon are fighters. Dracon clerics worship their own draconic pantheon which is led by the Ub-Kalla, or Full Leader. A dracon cleric has access to two of the following domains: Good, Healing, Knowledge, Protection, or Sun (favored weapon: halberd). Most dracon spellcasters are clerics.

In The Spheres

Dracon are newcomers to local wildspace. Their homeworld is a dry, arid planet covered with plains of fast-frowing grasses and desert. It also has large, shallow seas and at least one moon. Beyond this, not much is known.

Dracon mythology talks of a spider-like Dark God, their enemy and tempter. Their is a strong resemblance between this Dark God and the neogi, and the dracon hate these foul creatures in particular.

Dracons are a race of large humanoids who were magically evolved from dragons. They strongly resemble their ancestors, and although they are only about seven feet tall, they still have scaly skin, sharp teeth, long tails, and massive wings. Because of their origins, Dracons are innately evil. They are natural enemies of the Minotaurs, and will attempt to attack and kill them whenever possible.

Dracons may choose from the following classes: Wizard, Rogue, Barbarian, Psionic, Shaman

[Excursus: I have since learned that the assertion above about Dracon is pretty flimsy, since Dracon is only barely historical. He and Solon feature as the Givers of Law in the traditions of Athenian history, but only very small fragments survive (having to do with involuntary homicide) which can plausibly be attributed to Dracon, and theyre not very Draconian.]
The Law-maker Dracon

Solon was not actually the first of the Athenian legal reformers and lawmakers. In or around 620 BC, an individual named Dracon had instituted the city's first written code of laws.

Dracon in the dictionary

Draco[drAkO] Pronunciation Key or Dracon[drAkon] Pronunciation Key, fl. 621 B.C., Athenian politician and law codifier. Of his codification of Athenian customary law only the section dealing with involuntary homicide is preserved. From this and from later accounts in the writings of Aristotle and Plutarch it appears that in Athens the penalty of death was prescribed for the most trivial offense. The code adopted the principle that murder must be punished by the state and not by vendetta. Though the code was considerably ameliorated by Solon, its name became a synonym for harsh legislation.
